Welcome to Sustainable Santa Cruz, your online community connection to greener living. Our mission is to feature the most visionary people, places and events that keep Santa Cruz leading the way to a sustainable future.
But first off, what exactly is sustainability? There are various definitions, many of them complicated, but most converging on the basic notion that sustainability is a principle addressing how future growth and development takes place.
“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs”. — Brundtland (1987)
Every one of us make thousands of decisions each day. Often we have to choose between easy and immediate and… well… sustainable. Take bottled water for instance: buying something that requires pollutants and petroleum to create, is used once, then can virtually never be fully integrated back into the environment in a non-toxic way is not sustainable. The Dollar Store is not sustainable. Monsanto’s business plan to keep fertilizing mono-crops with petroleum while dousing them with Roundup to kill the weeds is not sustainable. As most of us are now realizing, continuing to poison the air, earth and ocean cannot be easily undone.
Fortunately, many of us here in Santa Cruz envision a different future, which is what this site is all about. There are healthy alternatives to every short-term environmental problem we face, we just need to take the time to look for it. Our features are based on positive experience, if we wouldn’t recommend it, you won’t find it here. I hope the information you find here keeps you motivated and inspired along your journey. And if you have news to share, just drop us a line. Here’s to a healthier future!
